Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between the materiality of the Modern Schools of São Paulo, in operation from 1911 to 1919, and their pedagogical practices. By investigating the objects, furniture and resources present in these institutions, we observe the possibilities of understanding how these specific elements shaped unique educational approaches. Although they faced resource constraints, Modern Schools sought to provide a practical education in natural sciences, stimulating students' senses and transforming the school environment into an engaging learning experience. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of city tours as an integral part of the educational process. We identified remnants of traditional teaching methods, highlighting duality in pedagogical practices. These conclusions highlight the influence of materiality in understanding the particularities of the Modern Schools of São Paulo and how this unique materiality shaped their distinct educational practices.
