Abstract: Literature occupies a prominent place in the educational process because it enables students to come into contact with different human, cultural and social experiences, contributing to the expansion of knowledge, aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking. In the context of Basic Education, literary works contribute not only to the development of reading and writing skills, but also to the construction of imagination, creativity, empathy and reflection on reality. Given the relevance of this theme, this article aims to analyze the contributions of literature to the integral development of students in Basic Education, considering its role in cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional and cultural development. This is a qualitative bibliographic study based on books, scientific articles, normative documents and academic productions that discuss literature as an essential element in the educational process. The study is mainly based on the theoretical contributions of Zilberman (2019), Lajolo and Zilberman (2022), Cosson (2020), Colomer (2017), Candido (2011), Coelho (2000) and Soares (2020), among other authors who investigate reading formation and the role of literature in schools. The results show that literature constitutes an important pedagogical tool for promoting meaningful learning and human development, fostering intellectual autonomy, interpretative ability, critical awareness and socio-emotional competencies. It is concluded that the systematic inclusion of literature in school life represents a fundamental strategy for the formation of competent readers and citizens capable of understanding, interpreting and transforming the reality in which they live.
