Abstract: Prenatal care is essential for maternal and child health, being recommended by the WHO from the beginning of pregnancy with periodic consultations. These consultations prevent diseases and offer multidisciplinary guidance, such as the prevention of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). GDM, caused by hormonal elevations during pregnancy, can be diagnosed and treated early during prenatal care. This study highlights the importance of prenatal care in preventing GDM, with a literature review carried out in databases such as LILACS, SCIELO and PubMed. Prenatal care includes actions to prevent maternal and fetal complications, being vital to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and improve birth conditions. The diagnosis of GDM should be made with glucose tests in the second trimester, with early screening recommended at the first prenatal visit. In conclusion, adequate prenatal care is crucial for the health of the pregnant woman and her baby.
