A IMPORTÂNCIA DA LITERATURA INGLESA PARA AS ESCOLAS
Através da literatura estrangeira, estudantes e professores são diretamente expostos à sociedade e história do país onde a língua-alvo é falada. Juntamente com o conteúdo de cada livro, há também oportunidades de aprender vocabulário novo e frases idiomáticas utilizadas noutros períodos. Na maioria dos casos, a linguagem nestes livros é bastante complexa. No entanto, cabe ao professor preparar os alunos antes da leitura. Isto deve envolver "pré-leitura", na qual é apresentada informação sobre o autor, a sociedade em que o autor viveu, o seu estilo de escrita, os temas da obra, vocabulário e expressões etc. Como resultado, os professores podem envolver e interessar os alunos na aula e facilitar a leitura do trabalho. A literatura também permite aos professores proporcionar aos estudantes discussões sobre temas que ainda hoje são debatidos, tais como diferenças sociais, preconceitos, casamento, educação, religião e política. Assim, os professores que se propõem trabalhar com textos literários em aulas de inglês, seja um livro inteiro, um extrato ou um poema, ganharão estudantes com perspectivas críticas e bons conhecimentos linguísticos e culturais como resultado do seu trabalho.

Abstract:
Through foreign literature, students and teachers are directly exposed to the society and history of the country where the target language is spoken. Along with the content of each book, there are also opportunities to learn new vocabulary and idiomatic phrases used in other periods. In most cases, the language in these books is quite complex. However, it is up to the teacher to prepare students before reading. This should involve "pre-reading", in which information is presented about the author, the society in which the author lived, his writing style, the themes of the work, vocabulary and expressions, etc. As a result, teachers can engage and interest students in class and make the work easier to read. Literature also allows teachers to provide students with discussions on topics that are still debated today, such as social differences, prejudice, marriage, education, religion, and politics. Thus, teachers who propose to work with literary texts in English classes, be it an entire book, an extract or a poem, will gain students with critical perspectives and good linguistic and cultural knowledge as a result of their work.
