Abstract: This paper aims to review the available literature on antimicrobial prophylaxis in surgery and discuss current recommendations for the rational use of antimicrobials in surgical prophylaxis. A systematic search of electronic databases was performed to identify relevant studies published in the last 10 years. From the analysis of the selected articles, it was possible to identify the classes of antimicrobials most used in surgical prophylaxis and the recommendations for dose, duration and time of administration. In addition, the factors that influence the choice of the appropriate antimicrobial were discussed, including the type of surgery, the local bacterial resistance profile and the patient's clinical conditions. The importance of judicious prescription of antimicrobials in surgeries was highlighted, in order to minimize the risks of postoperative infections, as well as the development of antimicrobial resistance. Limitations and shortcomings of the study were pointed out, and recommendations for future research were also discussed. In conclusion, this work provides an update on antimicrobial prophylaxis in surgery and provides valuable information for health professionals involved in clinical practice.
