Abstract: Assessment is an instrument that is often used inappropriately, prioritizing the quantitative result of school performance to the detriment of knowledge construction. A vision of the evaluation process is created that is completely distant from the teaching and learning process, as if “evaluating” were a distant and isolated action. This paper aims to present a more up-to-date spectrum on the assessment process that includes levels and functions of assessment, as well as a conception of comprehensive assessment that considers all learning moments. It presents, therefore, different educational trends, as well as different levels and functions of assessment and its objectives at each stage of the teaching process. It also seeks to be objective in relation to the concepts presented, aiming at the instruction and guidance of teachers who will make use of the present article as a source of research and reference for studies and preparation of the teaching plan itself.
