Abstract: ABSTRACT Introduction: Swallowing is often perceived as a simple action due to its constant and often automatic occurrence. However, this is a very elaborate process, involving a series of structures that act together and are coordinated by a neural mechanism. Swallowing shares the same space used by breathing and its purpose is to transport food from the mouth to the stomach, preventing it from entering the airways. This process involves a variety of structures located in the mouth, larynx, pharynx, and esophagus. Objective: To understand the importance of primary care in reducing inequalities by promoting health and well-being. Method: An integrative review is a research methodology that seeks to integrate results from different studies into a single work in order to clarify health issues at a more comprehensive level. The aim is to provide a complete and updated synthesis of the literature on a given interest. Results: The analysis shows that the population aging process in Brazil is directly related to the increased prevalence of chronic conditions among the elderly, such as dysphagia, which requires a more specific and multidisciplinary health approach. Primary Health Care (PHC), especially through the Family Health Strategy (FHS), is essential for early screening, management, and rehabilitation of dysphagia, ensuring continuous and comprehensive care for the elderly. Conclusion: The increase in life expectancy in Brazil imposes on the health system the need to restructure care management, especially with regard to the care of elderly people with chronic conditions such as dysphagia. To this end, it is essential to invest in the continued training of health professionals, as well as in the creation of public policies that ensure early detection, adequate management, and rehabilitation of this condition. Promoting comprehensive and multidisciplinary health care, strengthened by PHC, is essential to guarantee quality of life for the elderly and mitigate inequalities in access to health services.
