A Iconografia Na Pintura de Alberto Valença (1890-1983)
O objeto deste trabalho é a vida e
obra do pintor Alberto Valença (Alagoinhas 1890
– Salvador 1983), destacado representante
da Escola Baiana de Pintura. Seu objetivo
específico é identificar o caráter iconográfico de
trabalhos que representem prioritariamente a
cidade do Salvador na primeira metade do século
XX. Fatos marcantes da biografia e da trajetória
artística do pintor, relatados cronologicamente,
constituem o fio condutor do texto. Ao longo da
narrativa, destacam-se as pinturas de caráter
iconográfico, bem como acontecimentos e
personalidades do meio artístico-cultural da
época. Embora tenha passado a maior parte da
vida na Bahia, Valença frequentou a Academia
Julian, em Paris, em 1925/1926; viveu na
Bretanha em 1927/1928; e trabalhou no Rio de
Janeiro em 1931/1933. Por quase três décadas,
de 1933 a 1960, foi professor da Escola de
Belas Artes da Universidade Federal da Bahia
e mestre de várias gerações de artistas.

Abstract:
The object of this paper is Alberto
Valença’s life (Alagoinhas 1890 – Salvador
1983) and work, a distinguished representative
of Bahian School of Painting. Its specific
objective is identifying the iconographic content
of his paintings that represent, as priority, the
city of Salvador, Brazil, in the first half of the 20th
century. Remarkable facts of his biography and
artistic path, narrated in chronological order, are
the guideline to this text. Along the narration,
we distinguish the paintings of iconographic
content, as well as facts and personalities of
the cultural-artistic environment at that time.
Although Valença has spent most of his life in
Bahia, he attended Julian Academy of Fine Arts
in Paris, in 1925/1926; spent one year in Brittany,
in 1927/1928; and worked in Rio de Janeiro,
in 1931/1933. For almost three decades, from
1933 to 1960, as professor, he taught at the
School of Fine Arts of Bahia Federal University
and became a reference to several generations
of artists.
