Abstract: Portuguese, with more than 260 million speakers spread across four continents: America, Africa, Asia and Europe, occupies a significant position on the global stage, in part thanks to the rise of Brazil as an economic and political power, in addition to the growing relevance of Lusophony. This article explores the geopolitics of the Portuguese language, examining the arguments for and against its officialization at the UN and the possible consequences and opportunities that such recognition could entail. Through a critical analysis of geopolitical and linguistic contexts, the study seeks to evaluate the viability of the dream of making Portuguese an official language of the UN, highlighting the language's potential and the challenges that officialization would bring both to the Portuguese-speaking community and to the international organization itself.
