Abstract: This research aimed to conduct a bibliometric study of scientific articles published in the Scopus academic databases on innovation environments, seeking to understand the evolution of thought over the years and analyzing the perceptions of the gradual maturing of the definition and importance of advancing research topics on the subject. The concepts of “innovation habitats” and “innovation systems” were included, in addition to “innovation environments.” It was observed that the first publications occurred in the early 1970s and increased steadily from 1990 onwards, reaching over 500 publications in the year 2021, with countries such as the United Kingdom, China, and the United States predominating in terms of the number of publications. It was concluded that in the initial periods analyzed, research was mainly focused on defining innovation systems and characterizing systems within their national structures. In the last 10 years, research related to innovation policies, innovation clusters, and the relationship between innovation and technology stood out. In recent years, there has been an evolution in innovation-related topics, such as the evolution of the triple helix concept, debates related to sustainability, open innovation, and industry and agriculture 4.0.
