Abstract: Law No. 10.639, of January 9, 2003, is a law that changed the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (LDBEN No. 9.394/1996), by making the study of the theme "Afro-Brazilian History and Culture" mandatory in the official curriculum of the national Basic Education Network, as well as including November 20 as "National Black Consciousness Day" in the school calendar. However, when analyzing the applicability of such a regulation in these two decades of existence, it is found that a Eurocentric education is still in force in Brazil, although the country is composed mainly of people of African descent. In this context, this article has as its general objective to analyze the effectiveness of Law No. 10.639/2003 as a pedagogical strategy to combat institutional racism and, consequently, to promote an anti-racist education. In pursuit of this objective, qualitative research was adopted as the methodology, through a bibliographic and documentary review, both based on articles, dissertations, theses and laws that discuss the topic. The study carried out allows us to conclude that, in Brazil, more effective measures are needed so that education actually includes the teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African history and culture in all basic education schools.
