Abstract: Climate change, water conflict situations, the advance of desertification and sandification, species loss, and biome degradation are some of the circumstances symbolizing the environmental emergency we are currently experiencing. In this context, environmental education (EE) becomes an indispensable tool, as it holds great potential to promote reflection and engagement on the aforementioned topics, as well as to establish lines of action that lead to real changes capable of minimizing or preventing losses. However, EE, like other fields of knowledge, encompasses various strands and approaches, built and rebuilt over time and across different socioeconomic contexts. Authors such as Gustavo Ferreira da Costa Lima, Isabel Carvalho, Carlos Frederico Loureiro, and Philippe Layrargues have dedicated themselves to studying these different EE approaches, analyzing the evolution of environmental thought and its respective pedagogical practices throughout history. Therefore, using bibliographic research, this study aims to analyze the influences that the socioeconomic and political context of each era exerted on environmentalist thinking, which, in turn, underpins the construction of EE theory and practice.
