• Abstract:

  Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a

  chronic and degenerative disease of the central

  nervous system (CNS) that causes various motor

  and non-motor symptoms. Due to the numerous

  cares required by patients with neurological

  diseases, the caregiver may suffer physical

  and emotional overload. The nonprofessional

  caregivers with the least knowledge about PD

  is able to recognize their symptoms and natural

  evolution of the disease. In addition to being attentive to the demands of the patient,

  knowing how to differentiate situations of risk and make appropriate interventions. The

  objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of the nonprofessional caregivers

  of individuals with Parkinson’s disease about the pathology. The sample was selected

  for convenience and a questionnaire based on the study by Kaddumukasa, et al. (2015)

  in the form of an interview. Seven nonprofessional caregivers of patients with PD with

  mean age of 62.8 years, 6 were female, 100% knew the part of the body affected, 85.7%

  knew the cause, 85.7% knew the main symptom and 100% recognizes the importance

  of physical therapy. Through the research, it could be concluded that nonprofessional

  caregivers of individuals with PD have a good general knowledge about the disease.

  In addition, a good part can maintain healthy habits, performing physical and leisure

  activities regularly. However, it was possible to perceive the lack of information passed

  on by health professionals that can cause a search for information in dubious sources

  and to mitigate the Parkinson on the part of the caregiver.
