Abstract: Patient advocacy, in Brazil, was proposed as an ethical role for nurses' professional practice with patients and aims to ensure their rights, contributing to their autonomy. This is an experience report of nurses from an intensive care unit (ICU) in the practice of health advocacy at a reference public hospital, in Porto Alegre. In the ICU environment, the nurse rigorously defends the desires and wishes of those patients who cannot express these desires, through knowledge of their needs or knowledge of these through dialogue with the family. This action ensures factors such as guaranteeing the quality and completeness of patient care, defending autonomous action in decision-making by patients and their families, in addition to helping them understand their rights. The role of nurses in advocacy has been defined in the institution as the voice of patients, a way of empowering patients to make decisions and intervening in communication gaps between patients and other health professionals. Serving as a link between the patient and the healthcare environment, contributing to the quality of care, defending patients' rights and providing security in the care provided.
