Abstract: In the context of economic theory regarding the relationship between growth and development, economic complexity emerges as an analytical methodology capable of highlighting, albeit with its limitations, the degree of value added in the products exported by a country. Therefore, this article aims to analyze Brazil's export profile in terms of its complexity and its ability to translate growth into economic development. Thus, it can be observed that, according to the methodology employed, Brazil has experienced a process of "decomplexification" of its export profile, meaning that from 2001 to 2016, Brazilian exports have become increasingly concentrated on primary products with low value added. This trend has contributed to foreign trade primarily contributing to growth rather than the development of productive chains.
