Abstract: Objective: To identify the main impacts of risk classification on patient safety in hospital emergency services. Methodology: This is an integrative review, following the six-step methodology of Mendes, Silveira and Galvão in the Nursing Database, Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, Catalog of Theses and Dissertations, The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, Portal da PUBMED, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Virtual Health Library, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Scopus, using the descriptors: Triage, risk classification, patient safety, nursing, hospitals and decision-making. Results: The search resulted in a total of 148 publications, after screening and full reading 05 primary articles and 01 thesis were selected that answered the guiding question. The analysis made it possible to draw up the units of evidence, which were: delays in screening, professional experience, human and physical resources, decision-making time and the physical and emotional overload of the professionals involved. Conclusion: The role of nurses in risk classification is complex and decision-making involves several factors, including cognitive elements and aspects such as managing the flow of care. Efficient risk classification, based on protocols and scientific evidence, combined with adequate infrastructure and human resources, can greatly influence patient safety and the outcome of the therapeutic itinerary of those seeking care. Contributions to nursing practice: The professional nurse is qualified to identify complications and quickly define a solution through efficient and quality decision-making. Therefore, they are the professionals of choice to work in these places and must work with the management of these services in order to promote quality care and safety, playing a critical role in providing the user with a quick and accurate assessment, promoting results for the patient.
