A CABEÇA BRANCA DA HIDRA E SEUS PÂNTANOS: SUBSÍDIOS PARA UMA GEOGRAFIA DA HISTÓRIA DA AMAZÔNIA MARANHENSE, E PARA NOVAS PESQUISAS SOBRE COMUNIDADES INDÍGENAS, QUILOMBOLAS, E CAMPONESAS
A geografia e a cobertura vegetal do povoado Cabeça Branca o tornaram de grande importância estratégica e simbólica no encontro interétnico entre grupos Gamela, Ka’apor e quilombolas, no (re)conhecimento de, e troca de informações sobre seus inimigos comuns, na região e no plano nacional, e na deliberação sobre a conveniência do ano de 1867 para um ataque armado conjunto às fazendas de Pinheiro e Viana (num episódio conhecido como a Insurreição de Escravos de Viana), no Maranhão, em função da conjuntura excepcionalmente favorecida pelo deslocamento de tropas, de todo o país e da região, para o front da guerra com o Paraguai. Depoimentos por mim colhidos entre habitantes de Imbiral, comunidade quilombola vizinha a Cabeça Branca, e entre os Ka’apor da Terra Indígena Alto Turiaçu, reafirmam essa memória comum acerca da conveniência, especialmente das lagoas e rios largos e piscosos da região, frequentados por grupos indígenas e quilombolas (que ali podiam se avistar e se comunicar a distância segura para evitar eventuais ataques mútuos a flecha), para o estabelecimento de contatos e início de relacionamentos interétnicos amistosos. Abstract:
The geography and vegetation cover of the Cabeça Branca settlement made it of great strategic and symbolic importance in the interethnic encounter between Gamela, Ka'apor and quilombolas groups, in their mutual acquaintancing and exchanging of information about their common enemies, in the region and at the national level, and in the deliberation on the convenience of the year 1867 for a joint armed attack on the Pinheiro and Viana farms (in an episode known as the Viana Slave Insurrection), in Maranhão, due to the situation exceptionally favored by the displacement of troops, from all over the country and the region, to the front of the war with Paraguay. Testimonies collected by us from the inhabitants of Imbiral, a quilombola community close to Cabeça Branca, and among the Ka'apor of the Alto Turiaçu Indigenous Land, reaffirm this common memory about the convenience, especially of the wide and fishy lagoons and rivers of the region, frequented by indigenous groups and quilombolas (who could see and communicate each other at a safe distance avoiding possible mutual arrow attacks), for the establishment of contacts and the beginning of friendly interethnic relationships.
