Abstract: This chapter, titled "The Banana (Musa spp.) in Global and Local Scenarios: Taxonomic, Socioeconomic Perspectives and Challenges for the Sustainability of the Production Chain," thoroughly explores the fundamental importance of bananas, one of the world's leading agricultural commodities. It delves into its complex taxonomy and vast cultivar diversity, highlighting the fruit's crucial role in food security and income generation, especially for small-scale farmers in Brazil, a major producer. However, the core of the chapter lies in identifying the profound sustainability challenges that permeate the banana production chain. Factors such as adverse climate change, leading to scarcity and storm damage, and the aggravated spread of plant diseases, notably Fusarium Wilt Tropical Race 4 (TR4), impose significant losses and escalate costs. Geopolitical developments and low profitability for producers, driven by high production costs and unfavorable exchange rates, further compromise economic viability. Additionally, massive post-harvest losses, ranging from 20% to 40%, resulting from inadequate handling and logistics, represent an alarming waste of resources. To mitigate these pressing challenges, the chapter emphasizes the strategic potential of utilizing green bananas and their by-products, such as flours rich in resistant starch. This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also stimulates local agroindustry and socioeconomically empowers small producers. Furthermore, the text reinforces the importance of consuming in natura bananas as an accessible source of essential nutrients for human health, underscoring that the resilience and sustainability of this vital crop depend on continuous research, innovation, and the comprehensive valorization of its integral benefits.
