Abstract: The book written by Chico Buarque, "O Irmão Alemão" (The German Brother), is an autofiction in which the events are narrated by a narrator (characterized as a mirror of the author Chico Buarque) who calls himself Cicco. Throughout the story, the character's conflicts are described in a way that makes the reader feel very close to the actions and dialogues. This occurs due to the desire/curiosity to know more about the life of one of our greatest Brazilian artists, and also because it is a book written in the first person, making it much easier to identify with Chico/Cicco and his journey to unravel the mystery surrounding his family, or rather, what happened to his father—who had a son—during the time he spent in Germany and lived an affair with a woman. What can lead the reader to think it is an autobiography are the documents and photos that are included in the novel, as they are discovered by Cicco. The mixture of reality and fiction is addressed in the text by Leyla Perrone-Moisés. For the author, autofiction, not being bound to reality, can mix a real event with what one would like to have happened or change a fact or make it much more intense and caricatured, also seeking identification or empathy with the reader. This chapter aims to explore what can be real or fiction, focusing not only on aspects related to the subjects' lives but also on the contexts related to historical events in Brazil and Germany during the authoritarian regimes.
