• Abstract: Objective: to analyze the scientific literature on the role of nurses in the operating room and its main challenges. Method: This is an integrative review of the literature, demarcated through the LILACS, BDENF, and SciELO databases. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final sample consisted of 6 articles. The following thematic categories were adopted: the nurse's performance in the operating room, the importance of perioperative nursing systematization, and the challenges of nursing care in the operating room. It is concluded that nursing care is of paramount importance in the care of surgical patients. Results: Its performance is related to the control of materials, equipment, medication control, management of the nursing team, and direct patient care. Constantly building the qualification of professionals working in the Surgical Center through continuing education, with the use of the Systematization of Perioperative Nursing Care (SAEP), to make the environment organized, dynamic and participatory, empower the professional with safety and autonomy. Conclusion: It was concluded the importance of the nurse in maintaining a perception of the interpersonal relationships among the team, in relation to adverse events to the patient, as well as in the processes and objectives including results and quality.
