Abstract: Syphilis is a curable Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI), of chronic evolution and exclusive to human beings, its etiological agent is the bacterium Treponema pallidum and is considered a serious public health problem. In 10 years, 466,584 cases of syphilis in pregnant women were reported in Brazil, where 221,600 untreated or ineffective treatment cases evolved to congenital syphilis. Objective: To understand the role of nurses in the prevention of Congenital Syphilis in Primary Care; to know about Congenital Syphilis, form of transmission and its epidemiology; to identify the importance of prenatal care performed by nurses in order to reduce vertical transmission of syphilis; to describe the strategies adopted by nurses in the management of pregnant women diagnosed with syphilis. Materials and Methods: Research developed through a literature review, with exploratory explanatory properties. Data collected through queries in the following databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), LILICAS and Pubmed. The inclusion criteria were established according to the objective of the study, including articles published from 2012 onwards, in Portuguese, Spanish or English, available in full digitally. Articles that did not meet the parameters mentioned above were excluded. Results and discussion: Syphilis has an easy diagnosis and an effective treatment when performed with the correct guidance, the role of the nurse in the prevention of Congenital Syphilis in primary care plays a crucial role in reducing the vertical transmission of this infection, but there are still factors that keep the number of cases high, such as late start of prenatal care, non-use of condoms, non-performance of treatment by partners and, in some cases, inadequate nursing care
