WHICH MAN IS CURSED? A short syntactic-semantic analysis of Jr 17:5

“Cursed is the man that trust in man” (Jr 17:5). Here is one of the most known texts in the Hebrew Bible. The present study was presented orally at the I SIMPEB (Symposium Paulista of Biblical Studies) of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), in April 2021, as result of the author's participation in the Research Group Translation and Interpretation of the Old Testament (TIAT), CNPq of PUC-SP. The intention, therefore, of this brief syntactic-semantic analysis of Jr 17:5, is to demonstrate that this expression, which is often interpreted casually as a statement that people should not be trusted, is only one of the three components of a major grammatical construction. In addition, even the curse condition does not correspond to divine retaliation, but a direct consequence of human behavior concerning their own life choices.
