A Systematic Review of the Application of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in Systems Integration Environments

This systematic review summarizes the state of the art on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in systems integration environments. The study identifies use cases, architectures and implementation patterns published in the last five years, evaluating benefits, limitations and maturity when compared to traditional protocols such as REST, gRPC and LSP. The methodology follows PRISMA guidelines, covering IEEE Xplore, ACM DL, SpringerLink and arXiv databases. The results present a mapping of frameworks, security strategies and context controls, as well as gaps for future research. It is concluded that MCP offers gains in semantic clarity and interoperability for generative AI agents, but lacks formal standardization and robust context governance tools.
