THE CHALLENGES OF EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF LUNG CANCER

Lung cancer is one of the most common tumors in the Brazilian population, with a high mortality rate. The survival rate for a patient with this disease is about 5 years. Smoking is directly associated with this disease, but etiological factors such as family history, occupational risks, and exposure to air pollution can contribute to the onset of lung cancer. According to data from the National Cancer Institute (INCA), estimates for 2020 point to 30,200 new cases of tumors of the trachea, bronchi, and lung in the country. Adenocarcinoma was the most common histological type found in the patients surveyed. The Brazilian anti-smoking legislation is a world reference and has proven to be an important factor in the reduction of smoking in recent years. Thus, this review sought to observe which factors lead to a late diagnosis of lung cancer through the analysis of various existing literature and public data.
