METABOLIC SYNDROME IN CHILDHOOD DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
The Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a set of metabolic risk factors related to obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and arterial hypertension, which increase the possibility of cardiovascular events and general mortality. Additionally, MS is a risk factor for complications from COVID-19. While some of the arguments are speculative, an increase in childhood obesity rates during the COVID-19 pandemic is a realistic scenario. The coronavirus pandemic has led to laws and policies that include school closures, lockdown and social distancing laws and recommendations to control the pandemic, which has caused an increase in time spent on screens and this factor has contributed to the decrease in physical activity and increase consumption of unhealthy food.
