Ulcerative colitis: A review of the disease, drugs and nanocarriers

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a gastrointestinal disorder, a subtype of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, chronic, idiopathic, remitting and recurrent, which is of worldwide concern. Several studies have sought to understand the behavior of IBD and the drugs and/or nanocarriers used to treat it. Thus, this review includes a detailed bibliographical survey on the contemporary analysis of ulcerative colitis and its etiology. It presents the most commonly used drugs for the treatment of UC, such as sulfasalazine, mesalazine and their derivatives, showing their chemical structures and metabolism. Synthetic glucocorticoids are structural analogues of the endogenous steroid hormone cortisol, which help to improve the clinical condition of patients with mild to moderate RP by interacting with glucocorticoid receptors. The review also seeks to explore the potential of bismuth subsalicylate in treatment and finally the use of nanocarriers for drug delivery. With the data presented, it is hoped that this review will provide additional knowledge on Ulcerative Retocolitis, its treatment and advances, as well as a solid basis for other researchers.
