Abstract: The following article is based on teaching experience in the municipality of Madre de Deus in Minas Gerais. Faced with challenges in literacy and the recognition and appreciation of literary books, initiatives were carried out in the classroom to restore the value of reading, with a view to eradicating illiteracy, as set out in national education reference documents, and developing children's creative and imaginative abilities. This is a qualitative bibliographic study that draws on experience reports, analysis of related works, and analysis of public data from the Federal Government's National Commitment to Literate Children.
