Abstract: The present article aims to understand how cooperative members from the capital and the interior of the state of Paraná, Curitiba and Coronel Vivida, respectively, perceive cooperative principles as governance mechanisms. The research adopted a qualitative and comparative approach, using data triangulation obtained through open-ended questionnaires and documentary analysis of cooperative documents, such as bylaws and internal regulations. The results demonstrated that, although the documents present normative parity in governance structures, practice differs significantly between the regions. In cooperatives located in the capital, information asymmetry, low knowledge of cooperative principles, and distancing from decision-making processes were observed. Conversely, in the interior, relational proximity acted as an informal mechanism that mitigated the problems observed in the capital and favored trust and alignment of members’ interests, thereby reducing agency conflict. It is concluded that the effectiveness of cooperative governance is conditioned by the socioterritorial context, requiring cooperatives located in large urban centers to invest in communication and education in order to reduce the distance between principles, norms, practices, and cooperative members.
