PREVENTION OF HOME ACCIDENTS AND FIRST AID TRAINING FOR THE ELDERLY: EXPERIENCE REPORT

The prevention of household accidents among older adults is essential for promoting safety and quality of life, given this population’s increased vulnerability to events such as falls, choking, burns, electrical accidents, and fires. Such incidents are associated with high morbidity and mortality and can result in loss of independence and institutionalization. In this context, educational strategies and first aid training become fundamental. The present study aims to report on the experience of an educational initiative focused on the prevention of household accidents and the teaching of first aid practices to older adults. This is an experience report involving participants in a university extension project, in partnership with the Fire Department. The activity included theoretical and practical instruction on emergencies, such as airway obstruction and cardiopulmonary arrest. Good participant engagement was observed, along with increased understanding of preventive measures and appropriate responses in high-risk situations. It is concluded that educational initiatives of this nature contribute to the promotion of health, independence, and safety among the elderly population
