Prevalence of dermatophyte mycoses in the outpatient clinic of a tertiary care hospital in Guatemala from January 2020 to May 2025
Dermatophyte mycoses are superficial fungal infections caused by dermatophytes, which account for the majority of superficial infections in humans. In Guatemala, the prevalence of these infections is low, making it important to identify the most common causative agent affecting the population. To conduct this study, data were collected from the outpatient clinic of a tertiary-level hospital in Guatemala during the period from January 2020 to May 2025, considering only data on diagnoses of dermatophyte fungal infections, totaling 395 cases. It was determined that the prevalence of dermatophyte fungal infections in the outpatient clinic of a tertiary-level hospital in Guatemala during the period from January 2020 to May 2025 was 13%, with Trichophyton rubrum being the most frequent causative agent, present mainly in skin and nail samples, especially in adults aged 31 to 40; Microsporum canis was the second most common, being the primary cause of dermatophytosis in children aged 0 to 10 years, found mainly in scalp scrapings. Finally, a similar prevalence was observed in both genders (14.54% in women and 12.71% in men).
