EDUCATION: COURSE, SCIENCE, AND PROFESSION

This article aims to discuss pedagogy in three interrelated dimensions: the degree program, as a space for training; the science, as a field of knowledge; and the profession, as a social practice and professional activity. The discussion takes a critical and historical approach, reflecting on the development of the pedagogy program in Brazil, changes in the National Curriculum Guidelines, the challenges of teacher education, and the consolidation of the educator’s professional identity. Drawing on authors such as Saviani, Libâneo, and Mascarenhas, among others, the text highlights the relevance of research in the field of education, the need for integration between theory and practice, and the obstacles to the recognition of education professionals in the contemporary context. It concludes that pedagogy is more than just a profession: it is a field of knowledge committed to social justice, holistic education, and the transformation of reality through educational practice.
