PALLADIO AND THE LANDSCAPE

The objective of this work is, on the one hand, to investigate the emergence of landscape through certain key moments in history, primarily the Renaissance, and, in particular, its development in the art and architecture of the Venetian region during the 16th century, which would reach its highest expression in the architecture of the villas designed by Andrea Palladio. On the other hand, it describes the development of agriculture as a consequence of a very clear and successful policy of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, which, upon losing its traditional maritime and land routes that had made it a rich and powerful nation, had to turn its attention to its inland territory and seek to develop agriculture. This decision would indirectly lead to the emergence of villas (which in Mexico we know as haciendas), livable suburban spaces, which the architect Andrea Palladio would synthesize into a concept of housing that was both very comfortable and dignified for wealthy landowners, yet also highly suited to agricultural functions, while achieving excellent integration with the surrounding natural landscapes.  Later, Palladio’s architecture would spread and influence other countries such as England, where, through the work of architect Inigo Jones, it would become the national architectural style for a long period.
