Abstract: Civil engineering projects must be carried out with due care, respecting the safety limits established by standards according to the type of structure. This process of investigation and critical analysis requires engineers to develop tools and methods that facilitate the search for the most suitable solution, considering the several possible approaches to the problem. In deterministic methods, all values and parameters involved in the analysis are known; however, due to the large amount of design data and inherent uncertainties, these values are treated as variables that may be reassigned depending on the conditions, while ensuring that structural failure does not occur. This study employed optimization methods using Excel® and its Solver® module to compare, from both technical and economic perspectives, different dam configurations (concrete and earthfill) built on soft and stiff clayey soils. The analysis made it possible to determine the optimal base length of the cross-section and to assess the safety factors against sliding and overturning, all within normative limits. The results indicated that although the concrete dam requires a smaller volume of material, its cost is nearly ten times higher than that of the earthfill dam, highlighting the importance of optimization, through computational tools, in supporting decision-making in civil engineering projects.
