OBESIDAD INFANTIL Y COMPLICACIONES CARDIOVASCULARES, ENDOCRINO-METABÓLICAS: UN ANÁLISIS RETROSPECTIVO EN EL HOSPITAL ICAZA BUSTAMANTE DEL 2017 AL 2022 - GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR

• Abstract: Introduction:  Obesity is defined by the WHO as ‘an abnormal and excessive accumulation of body fat, but due to the difficulties in directly measuring total body fat, the calculation of body mass index (BMI) is preferred’ Objective: To analyse the prevalence and characteristics of cardiovascular, endocrine-metabolic complications associated with childhood obesity in patients attended at the Icaza Bustamante Hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador, between 2017 and 2022. Methodology: This research is quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive, the sample consisted of 100 cases subject to selection criteria. Results: The results showed that cardiovascular disorders were the most frequent with 47%, followed by endocrine-metabolic disorders with 38% and psychological disorders with 27%. In the socio-demographic characterisations, the predominant sex was male and the age group was 10-14 years. Based on the results obtained we describe the presence of obesity with the risk of developing complications, including insulin resistance with 28% and dyslipidaemia with 41%.   Conclusion: Obesity is a risk factor for developing clinical complications in the different systems and systems, bringing with it an increased risk of suffering chronic diseases in the long term, so it is important to follow up for timely diagnosis and to make changes in the infant's lifestyle, especially in physical activity and reducing excessive calorie intake.
