Abstract: This article aims to analyze the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh and relate it to the Nietzschean concept of the tragic regarding pain. The painting "Self-Portrait with a Bandaged Ear" was analyzed to establish a dialogue with Nietzschean thought on pain and how it can be a mechanism that builds up the individual. The idea to connect the philosopher and the painter came from the similarity in how they dealt with pain. Even when facing life's anxieties, they did not succumb to suffering; instead, they sought ways to transform all of life's anguish with a new way of thinking and acting. Therefore, this article seeks to analyze this tragic Nietzschean concept in the painter's article and understand the tragic within the artwork itself.
