Abstract: This article sought to develop an in-depth study of the contribution of gemology as a science, particularly the role of the gemologist, to gemological research involving the conservation and restoration of jewelry. Although research on the topic exists, there are no in-depth studies, thus creating the idea of filling a significant gap in the field by addressing the multidisciplinary nature of gemology and cultural heritage research. This work addresses the relationship between professionals from different fields—not only gemologists, but also conservators, restorers, goldsmiths, historians—and, most importantly, the ethics of these interdisciplinary fields. The gemologist's direct responsibility is to detect potential damage or wear that occurs in gems and associated materials over time, as well as to interpret appropriate procedures in the restoration process for gems and metals. Jewelry is intertwined with the preservation of cultural assets, precisely because of their artistic and historical significance and their antiquity. For gemological research to be credible, analytical techniques such as microscopy, spectrometry, UV-VIS-NIR, and Raman spectrometry are required. These techniques aim to describe both macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, utilizing non-destructive analytical techniques commonly used for gemstone and cultural heritage analysis. The methodology applied in this study consists of research and review of bibliographic material, such as books, articles, and others.
