Abstract: The main objective of this work is to address the use of the school newspaper as a pedagogical tool to support learning and the development of reading practices — first of the world — enhancing this literacy practice in the formation of critical and reflective readers, as well as the appropriation of the city as a literacy-rich territory. It also brings into discussion the training of early childhood teachers. This text reports and analyzes a pedagogical intervention project involving the creation of a school newspaper in a 5th-grade class at Lêda Vargas Giannerini Municipal School, located in the city of São Gonçalo. The aim is to examine the importance of reading practices related to the environment in which the student is situated, and how this contributes to their civic formation, while also supporting the improvement of literacy practices. From this perspective, through the development of the proposed activity, we could observe each student’s potential, the appreciation of local knowledge and events, as well as the interaction between school and community.
