THE BALANCE BETWEEN PRINCIPLES AND PROCESSES: AN ANALYSIS OF THE NEW FEATURES IN THE PMBOK GUIDE 8TH EDITION
The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) has been the primary reference for professionals in the field for decades. Following the disruptive transition from the 6th to the 7th edition, which abandoned the process-based structure in favor of a principles-focused approach, the 8th edition, released in 2026, seeks to strike a balance. This article analyzes the main changes introduced in the 8th edition, including the reintroduction of 40 formal processes, the consolidation of 6 principles and 7 performance domains, and the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability as strategic pillars. A detailed comparison with the previous edition is also provided, highlighting the benefits of the new structure for professional practice.
