Abstract: The study entitled “Play as a Pedagogical Practice in the Literacy Process in Early Childhood Education” aims to highlight the importance of playful activities in the construction of knowledge and in the development of reading, writing, and children’s cognitive, social, and emotional skills. The research is justified by the need to rethink and develop pedagogical practices that support the literacy process, which is often carried out in a mechanical and decontextualized way, disregarding the specific characteristics of childhood. In this context, play emerges as a strategy that makes learning more meaningful, enjoyable, and inclusive, valuing the child as an active subject in the construction of knowledge. The general objective of the study is to investigate play as a pedagogical strategy in the literacy process in early childhood education. The specific objectives are to analyze how playful activities can contribute to the teaching of reading and writing, identify the benefits of play for the child’s overall development, and present games and playful activities that support learning in the classroom. The methodology used is based on bibliographic research, grounded in studies, books, scientific articles, as well as the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), which addresses early childhood literacy and serves as a guide for teachers in order to ensure learning based on fields of experience, focusing on play and interaction, reinforcing the importance of play in child development. The study is also supported by the theoretical conceptions of education scholars such as Lev Vygotsky, who defend playfulness as an essential element for children’s development and learning. It is concluded that play plays a fundamental role in the literacy process, as it encourages children’s active participation, stimulates interest in learning, and contributes to the development of cognitive, social, emotional, and motor skills. Thus, the inclusion of playful practices in the school context makes the educational process more dynamic, interactive, and effective, promoting more meaningful learning that is appropriate to children’s age group.
