Abstract: This study examines grief over the loss of idols, celebrities, and public figures, and seeks to analyze how these losses affect the emotional well-being of individuals who, even without having known them personally, form bonds with such figures. The study draws its theoretical foundation from Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory to understand how identification with public figures contributes to identity formation and how the loss of this bond can affect the bereaved individual’s emotional state, requiring them to reconstruct their identity. The methodology adopted for this study is a qualitative discourse analysis, focusing on engaging with Bandura’s theory to analyze the unacknowledged grief experienced by fans. The findings indicate that this aspect of mourning for public figures is a legitimate phenomenon, yet one that is rarely discussed in Brazil when compared to the volume of foreign research on the topic. It can be concluded that this is a subject that deserves due attention; it needs to be reflected upon and discussed in order to legitimize the emotional pain resulting from the loss of significant role models.
