Abstract: The present study aimed to contribute to the development of mathematical literacy in the process of teaching and learning graphs in Elementary School. To achieve this objective, a didactic sequence was developed focusing on reading, interpreting and constructing simple column graphs. This sequence was applied to two 3rd grade classes in Elementary School, in two different schools. As a methodological approach, we chose to work with a qualitative approach of an interpretative nature, to investigate whether the proposed activities were really capable of helping mathematical literacy, in relation to the graph content. Data collection was carried out based on the observation of students' reports and actions in the application of the proposed activities. Data analysis confirmed the importance of applying didactic sequences adapted to the context and age group of the students, using concrete material, and from this, developing mathematical literacy and, consequently, statistical literacy.
