Abstract: This article analyzes the evolution of mixed methods in educational research, emphasizing their ability to address complex phenomena through the systematic integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches. This paradigm is not limited to juxtaposing techniques, but rather seeks meaningful articulation that generates deep and contextualized inferences. The text examines four fundamental axes: methodological and philosophical basis, design typologies, integration strategies, and practical implementation challenges. Designs are classified as basic (convergent, sequential explanatory, and sequential exploratory) and complex (experimental, case studies, participatory-social justice, and evaluative), each with specific purposes and integration logics. Methodological integration is at the core of the approach, requiring consistency from design to the construction of meta-inferences that arise from the combination of both types of data. Among the main challenges identified are: superficial integration of results, insufficient training of researchers in both approaches, the tendency to pigeonhole methods into rigid paradigms, and the need to make the logic of articulation explicit. The article concludes that mixed methods represent an opportunity to build more complete and useful knowledge for educational transformation, provided that a reflective, critical, and ethically committed attitude to the complexity of the phenomena studied is maintained.
