Abstract: This article aims to analyze the ways in which the main character (Joana) of "Perto do coração selvagem" (1943), the debut novel by Clarice Lispector, approaches the element of water throughout the narrative. This approach encompasses not only the reveries provoked by the protagonist’s contact with the materiality of water, but also her liquid and fluid nature as a woman who breaks with the apparent solidity and static character of the patriarchal social norms of the time. To this end, the study draws on theoretical frameworks related to women’s issues—Gerda Lerner (2019), Simone de Beauvoir (1970), and Pierre Bourdieu (2012)—as well as on the contributions of Gaston Bachelard (2013), particularly regarding the nature of water in literature. The combination of this theoretical framework with excerpts from the novel seems to confirm the interpretive possibility that emphasizes Joana’s transience and fluidity in consonance with water, whether in the form of rain, river, bathing, or the sea.
