INTERGENERATIONALITY AS A CARE STRATEGY IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE: IMPACTS ON ANXIETY MANAGEMENT

Anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental disorders, impacting quality of life and daily functioning. Care strategies that promote social interaction, such as intergenerational programs, have shown promise in Primary Health Care (PHC). The present study aimed to analyze the impacts of intergenerationality on anxiety management, evaluating its effects on social support, engagement, and emotional resilience. This is an exploratory, mixed-methods study conducted in PHC units, involving children, adults, and older adults in structured intergenerational activities. Data were collected through interviews, administration of the GAD-7 scale to assess anxiety, and participant observation, and were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results indicated a reduction in anxiety symptoms, strengthened social bonds, and the development of socio-emotional skills, such as empathy and a sense of belonging. Interaction among different age groups fostered the exchange of experiences and engagement in healthcare, in addition to improving participants’ adherence to guidelines. It is concluded that intergenerationality constitutes an effective and complementary strategy for managing anxiety in primary healthcare, promoting comprehensive care, emotional well-being, and the strengthening of support networks. Future studies should investigate its sustainability and applicability in different contexts.
