Abstract: Oral communication interactions between teachers and students involve communicative skills that elicit a range of reactions, such as satisfaction, acceptance or rejection of proposed activities, and varying levels of interest in the subject matter. This is a basic resource that permeates the teacher’s work, yet it remains scarcely addressed during teacher education. Objective: A review of scientific publications was conducted on oral communication interactions between teachers and students, based on the premise that oral communication is essential to the interactions necessary for child development and fundamental as a skill for teachers, according to Historical-Cultural Theory and the works of Maurice Tardif. Method: An integrative review was carried out using data collected from 2015 to 2020, including articles available on the CAPES Journal Portal (dissertations and theses), as well as scientific articles published in journals indexed in SciELO and Google Scholar. These findings were integrated with results from earlier reviews conducted by the same researcher between 1990 and 2014. Conclusion: The scientific results published over the course of three decades (1990 to 2020) have gradually contributed to a better understanding of the relevance and potential improvement of communicative skills in fostering meaningful student-teacher interactions. These skills are essential to promoting respectful engagement that enriches the teaching and learning process. However, despite clear evidence that communicative competencies enhance classroom interaction, they are still rarely emphasized in teacher education programs.
