Abstract: This study analyzes the implementation and monitoring of the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) indicator as a global performance metric in railway operations, focusing on the Carajás Railway (Estrada de Ferro Carajás) in Northern Brazil. The research aimed to evaluate the application of OEE as a managerial tool for optimizing production capacity and equipment performance within a large-scale railway maintenance system. The methodology combined quantitative, qualitative, and action-research approaches over a 90-day implementation and 12-month follow-up period. Results demonstrate that the adoption of OEE provided significant insights into operational availability, productivity, and utilization, contributing to improved maintenance planning, enhanced asset reliability, and alignment with sustainable mobility and infrastructure resilience goals. The study reinforces OEE as a strategic tool for data-driven decision-making in high-performance railway systems.
