Potential Environmental Impacts of Shale Gas Exploration in Brazil: Risks, Regulation, and Challenges

The exploitation of shale gas through fracking has had negative impacts worldwide, posing significant risks to the security of drinking water supplies, public health, and the environment. These adverse effects have led some countries to refine this technique and register patents, while others have imposed bans and moratoriums on its use within their borders.
Through an exploratory and descriptive study using qualitative methods, this paper aims to examine the potential environmental impacts caused by the use of hydraulic fracturing combined with horizontal drilling in shale gas extraction in Brazil, based on international experiences, articles, and documents regarding this extraction.
