The Impact of Cosmetic Procedures on Patients' Mental Health

Cosmetic procedures have seen significant growth in recent decades, driven by an increased emphasis on physical appearance, the influence of social media, and technological advances in aesthetic medicine. At the same time, there has been a rise in scientific interest in the impacts of these procedures on patients’ mental health. The aim of this study is to analyze the psychological and emotional effects resulting from cosmetic procedures, considering both benefits and potential negative consequences. This is a narrative literature review conducted through the analysis of scientific articles published in national and international databases, including PubMed, Scielo, and Google Scholar, between 2015 and 2026. The results show that cosmetic procedures can positively contribute to self-esteem, self-confidence, and quality of life, especially when performed ethically and with realistic expectations. However, risks related to body dissatisfaction, cosmetic dependency, body dysmorphic disorder, anxiety, and depression were also identified, particularly in psychologically vulnerable patients. It is concluded that multidisciplinary assessment and psychological follow-up are essential to ensure greater emotional well-being for patients undergoing cosmetic procedures, promoting more satisfactory outcomes and reducing negative impacts on mental health.
