IMPACT OF THE SURGICAL TREATMENT OF GYNECOMASTIA ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE AND SELF-ESTEEM OF PATIENTS

Introduction: Gynecomastia is the temporary or definitive increase of the male breast, that can be because of the excess of the glandular tissue or the adipose tissue or both. Gynecomastia incidence is very variable, affecting 32 to 65% of men. Surgical treatment is indicated when there is no spontaneous regression. Results: There was a statistical significant difference in four sections of SF-36: vitality, emotional role functioning, mental health and functional capacity. There was an increase in self-esteem evidenced in the Rosenberg questionnaire. Conclusion: In this study, the patients treated surgicaly to correct gynecomastia had an improvement in quality of life and self-esteem evaluated through the questionnaires.
