Functional Groups and Healthier Aging Among Institutionalized Older Adults: A Literature Review

The aging process is a natural phenomenon that involves various biopsychosocial changes throughout the human lifespan. Research on this topic is becoming increasingly relevant due to the continuous growth, both nationally and globally, of the population aged 60 and older. In particular, this study, through a literature review of articles and scholarly works on the subject, seeks to present conceptual foundations for group psychotherapy with institutionalized older adults, for whom psychological support is considered essential. Psychology, as both a practice and a science, can contribute not only to the management of emotional issues but also to rehabilitation, cognitive stimulation, and the strengthening of autonomy. Working with older adults through psychotherapeutic and psychoeducational groups can offer, among other benefits, a space for the exchange of experiences and the development of bonds.
